Nine Mile Hill (2022)

Steve Kovalcheck

With deep roots in jazz, blues, and Americana, guitarist and composer Steve Kovalcheck brings a lived-in authenticity to Nine Mile Hill, his newest recording as a leader. Joined by Jon Hamar on bass and Danny Gottlieb on drums, Kovalcheck crafts music that feels effortless yet intentional — a blend of groove, lyricism, and quiet storytelling that reflects his years on the bandstand and in the classroom.

Rather than leaning on technical flash, Kovalcheck lets tone and phrasing do the talking. The opening track, “Gratitude,” sets a mood of patience and warmth, unfolding slowly like an early-morning drive. The title track, “Nine Mile Hill,” expands that landscape with fluid lines and harmonic turns that feel both spontaneous and deeply composed. Elsewhere, tunes like “The Happy Camper” and “Rolling” bring a sense of play — open, swinging, and grounded in a subtle country sensibility.

There’s a natural cohesion to the trio — each player shaping the music without crowding it. Gottlieb’s brushwork and Hamar’s melodic bass create a rhythmic terrain that Kovalcheck navigates with ease, his guitar tone glowing with the kind of clarity that only comes from years of listening first and playing second.

What makes Nine Mile Hill stand out is its sense of place. The music carries traces of Nashville’s storytelling, Colorado’s wide-open feel, and the harmonic richness of modern jazz. Kovalcheck isn’t trying to reinvent the form — he’s reminding us of its roots in sincerity and song. The result is an album that breathes, one that invites reflection rather than demands attention.
